Passed

  • 3D Virtual Pinball - runs only with PC Pro; intro screen flickers badly; sound works except during game; playable with 486DX2/66 but 2D version crashes, game is too fast when video retrace is not set to 'normal'
  • 7th Guest (all versions) - runs only with PC Pro; sound is supposed to work with latest version of PC Sound Professional, but may not; some people have apparently got sound working without it (setting RetraceEmulation to 0, and "Soundblaster" and "General MIDI" in the game's own options seems to be the trick here); music requires MIDI (seems to work fine with ESP midi synth); scrolling sluggish with StrongARM and 486DX2/80
  • A-10 Tank Killer (Kixx/Dynamix) - interesting but not stunning military flight sim; soundblaster sound doesn't work
  • Absolute Zero (demo) - runs only with PC Pro; sound works with 16-bit sound card without MIDI support; in-flight sections are very slow with ARM610 and 5x86; seems to need plenty of RAM
  • Abuse (demo) - platform shootemup; much faster with StrongARM than without; sound fails without PC Sound Pro, but we've been told by R-Comp that it works well with it
  • Aces over Europe (CD) - sound effects highly effective with MIDI support
  • Actua Soccer 1995 (Gremlin) (demo) - works with PC Pro v2.01, but not with !PC 1.92. Very fast with ARM610 and 100MHz 5x86 in low-resolution mode once you are in the actual stadium
  • Advanced Tactical Fighter - sound works with PC Sound Pro
  • Air Force Commander WWII - problems with display? (screenfuls of green dots...)
  • Aladdin - no in-game sound, requires screen mode defining (comes with GameOn!), "slower than a real PC but playable" on DX4/100 card, fine on 5x86
  • Albion - sound works with PC Sound Pro
  • Alien Trilogy
  • Alone in the Dark I-III CD - sound and games work fine; playably fast with ARM710 and 486SX but animations can be slow (possibly due to slow CD-ROM)
  • Another World - no sound, rather fast
  • Anvil of Dawn - sound works with PC Sound Pro
  • Apache Longbow - no sound
  • Arcade Pool
  • Armour Alley - needs to be configured to use PC speaker sound rather than Soundblaster sound in order to work
  • ATF (Electronic Arts, demo) - runs only with PC Pro v2.02 or later and 16-bit sound; rather slow with ARM610 and 5x86 (considered unplayable by some), but it is too slow to be playable on some real 100MHz Pentiums as well; no sound
  • Azrael's Tear (Mindscape, demo) - runs only with PC Pro
  • B-17 Flying Fortress (Microprose, CD) - crashes often, apparently "the trick is not to do too many things at once"; soundblaster sound fails
  • Bad Mojo (Pulse Entertainment, demo, Windows) - sound perfect with 16-bit sound but no MIDI support; speed acceptable with ARM610 and 5x86; apparently it "gives you a glimpse of what life can be like in a run-down apartment building - from the point of view of a cockroach!"
  • Battleground Ardennes (demo and full version, Windows 3.11) - sound effects and video sequences all work fine with StrongARM, 5x86 and PC Pro, even without PC Sound Professional; for a couple of the very largest scenarios you will need to allocate at least 20MB to the PC card to get reasonable speed (this would be the case for a real PC too); otherwise speed should be fine even for slower cards
  • Battleground Gettysburg (demo)
  • Beneath a Steel Sky - only MIDI sound works; sluggish with ARM710, fine with StrongARM and 5x86
  • Bermuda Syndome (BMG) (Windows) - platform game
  • Big Red Racing - playable in full screen VGA with ARM710 and 5x86, a bit faster with StrongARM and 5x86
  • Blackthorne - very slow with 486DX4/100; graphics distorted
  • Blake Stone (Apogee / iD / Jam Productions 1993) - Wolfenstein 3D in space

  • Bomb25 - "Worms"-type game
  • Broken Sword - adventure game, runs only with PC Pro, sound excellent but graphics rather sluggish even with StrongARM and 5x86
  • Brutal - Paws of Fury (demo) - sound fails, far too slow to be playable with ARM710 and 486DX2/66
  • Buried in Time - works from CD
  • Cadaver - slow with ARM610 and 486SX; problems with gameplay; no sound
  • Campaign 2 (demo) - works fine with PC Pro, ARM710 and 486DX2/66
  • Carmaggedon - slow but playable with StrongARM and 5x86, sound works but causes lots of crashes
  • Casino Expert for Windows (Expert Software, 1993)
  • Championship Manager
  • Championship Manager II - runs only with PC Pro; sound works with PC Sound Pro; some people have had trouble with saved games, but they work fine for others
  • Championship Manager Italia
  • Championship Pool (Windows) - 2D pool and snooker game
  • Chronicles of the Sword (demo) - runs only with PC Pro; excellent graphics, speed reasonable with ARM610 and 100MHz 5x86, would probably benefit from CD-ROM drive faster than 2x
  • Chronomaster - sound works with PC Sound Pro
  • Civilisation 1, Colonization (originally sound apparently needed to be turned off for these, but Civilisation is faster with it enabled, even without a sound card), Railroad Tycoon Deluxe, and Pirates!Gold - these all from "Sid Meier's Classic Compilation" (or similar title) on CD for DOS - speed can depend on mode you start each game in, graphics need to be in 16 colours; in Civilisation (and possibly the others too), select MCGA graphics and PC speaker sound, and ensure Video ReTrace Emulation is set to "Normal" (0) (for most other games you can set it to "Fast B" (2) for a tiny bit more speed)
  • Championship Manager I
  • Championship Pool (Wizardworks) - 2D Windows pool game, also does snooker etc., not terribly good
  • Civilisation for Windows - map redraw much faster with faster PC card (but still acceptable without); appear to be even more increases in speed (although relatively minor) with PC Pro; ensure Video ReTrace Emulation is set to "Normal" (0) for this game (for most other games you can set it to "Fast B" (2) for more speed); select MCGA graphics for best speed
  • CivNet (network version of Civilisation) - can allegedly be made to work over a LAN using TCP/IP (not IPX) with latest patch version
  • Civilisation 2 (Microprose) - sound and graphics fine on 486DX2/80 in RPC700; video clips too slow but not needed anyway; recommended; rolling demo works too
  • Close Combat (Win95, demo)
  • Comanchee versus Apache - works under PC Pro if you define an MDF for it, but not under earlier versions?
  • Command & Conquer (Westwood Studios) - video clips work; sound works (but not brilliantly) with PC Sound Professional, otherwise leave it switched off as it may cause crashes; speed quite acceptable (considerable improvement with faster PC card, particularly video clips; additional speed improvements with PC Pro); also runs under Win95; installation takes a while; CD version requires 35MB disk space if installed to hard drive; CD-ROM drive faster than 2x beneficial for video clips; minor mouse pointer problems on some systems (?); demo works; Covert Operations mission disk also works although installation program crashes after finishing; Ultimate Command & Conquer patch works; network play options work with both null modem cable and proper networking, but a real PC will have the advantage
  • Command & Conquer Red Alert - DOS version runs (display problems on some systems?) but Win95 version (including level editor) won't because it uses DirectX; sound works (but not brilliantly) with PC Sound Professional, see additional setup details; network play options work with both null modem cable and proper networking, and it's possible to defeat opponents who are using real Pentium PC's; Counterstrike update works; video works nicely with StrongARM, 5x86 and PC Pro; Ultimate Red Alert patch works
  • Connections (The Discovery Channel, demo, Windows) - sound perfect with 16-bit sound but no MIDI support; "appears to be some sort of interactive adventure thing"
  • Creature Shock (demo) - works on !PC v1.91 or later; perfectly playable with ARM710 and 486SX33
  • Crusader : No Regret (Origin, demo) - runs only with PC Pro; just about playable with ARM710 and 486SX if frame skipping turned on and animations off; very playable (including with animations) using StrongARM and 5x86; sound and music works (without MIDI) but is rather crackly (or "perfect", depending on who you believe); sound skips in FMV sequences (turn subtitles on); turning sound off improves speed
  • Crusader : No Remorse (Origin, demo) - runs only with PC Pro; just about playable with ARM710 and 486SX if frame skipping turned on and animations off; very playable with ARM610 and 5x86 (although some say scrolling very slow); sound and music works well (without MIDI) except in FMV sequences (turn subtitles on); turning sound off improves speed

  • Destruction Derby 2 - sound works with PC Sound Pro
  • The Dig - problems with sound, better with faster processors
  • Discworld (Terry Pratchett's) - speech works from CD, music can be made to work with ESP MidiSynth; scrolling jerky on 486SX, but perfect on 5x86/100 or 133, and fine on ARM710 & 486DX4/100 combination; minor bugs in the game, such as sound disappearing occasionally, appear on real PCs too, and patches are available from Psygnosis
  • Discworld II (CD) - Win95 version fails due to needing DirectX, DOS version will run but only with PC Pro; speed sluggish with ARM710 and 486DX2/80, still slow even with StrongARM and 486Dx4/100; sound works if configured to be "Creative Labs Soundblaster or 100% compatible", but not terribly well; 2MB video RAM (and 2MB allocated for PC display) essential; EMM386 must be removed from CONFIG.SYS for the game to work; loading very slow on many CD-ROM drives
  • Doom - sound often distorted on normal drivers, but much better with PC Sound Professional; needs monitor definition file changes for full-screen view; noticeable but not huge improvement with faster PC card, massive improvement with StrongARM (ARM610 + 486SX gives 2.49 frames/sec, ARM610 + 5x86/100 gives 2.98 frames/sec, ARM710 + 486SX gives 3.68 frames/sec; Doom v1.9 Shareware on small screen/low detail with ARM610 + 486SX gives 7 frames/sec, upgrading to PC Pro gives 8 frames/sec, StrongARM and PC Pro gives 17 frames/sec); hints on running in network mode under IPX are also available
  • Doom II - sound distorted on normal drivers, but better with PC Sound Professional; noticeable but not huge speed improvement with faster PC card, StrongARM upgrade gives very worthwhile speed improvement

  • Dr. Brain (Sierra) (Windows) - crashes occasionally on some systems if screensaver left running (it does this on a real PC too, apparently); use ALT-TAB to switch to Program Manager and back again if sound disappears
  • Dr. Draco's Madcap Chase (Windows)
  • Dreadnoughts Plus (On-line Entertainment)
  • Duck Hunt 1.0 for Windows ... oh dear
  • Duke Nukem' 2 (Apogee) - sideways-scrolling platform shootemup; sound fails
  • Duke Nukem 3D (3D Studios) (Shareware 1.1) - Doom-clone with improved graphics; averages 2 frames per second on ARM610 and 486SX ("unplayable"); others claim playable with ARM610 and 486SX; fairly playable with ARM610 and 5x86 card; very playable with StrongARM and 5x86; requires 8MB (or even more?) RAM allocated to PC card, so probably 10MB+ Risc PC absolute minimum requirement; use of PC Pro allows 640x480 and 800x600 SVGA screen modes to work, but these are only playable if you have a StrongARM; sound problematic, game is faster if you turn it off, setting SharedMemFlags to 0 can help but read your documentation first; try setting sound for 3 voices and 8-bit stereo
  • Dune - sound works with PC Sound Pro; note that this game is nothing like Dune 2!

  • Extreme Pinball - slow and annoying redraw errors with ARM610 or ARM710, but "faster than a real PC" with StrongARM and 486DX4/100 (in fact, slowing it down a little with "*cache ID" in a TaskWindow before running it will help it to play at the right speed); also adjust USER.TXT file inside Extreme Pinball directory for your favourite settings; sound fails; scoreboard doesn't work properly
  • Euro '96 (Gremlin) (demo) - menus are in colour with PC Pro but only b/w with !PC 1.92; high-res mode when playing is quite slow with ARM610 and 100MHz 5x86, low-res nice and fast

  • Space Cadet Pinball (Win95)
  • Space Crusade - game works fine, but gameplay allegedly poor

  • Swiv 3D (Sci, demo) - 3D version of the classic shootemup, sound effects are OK without PC Sound Pro except for the absence of gun noises; 320x400 mode works but probably too slow on anything other than StrongARM; not as fun as the original
  • Syndicate (Bullfrog/Electronic Arts/Hit Squad) - big improvement with ARM710, but well worth playing on ARM610; smaller speed improvement with faster PC cards. Sound works, but slows game down too much to be playable (it does the same on a real Pentium PC)
  • Tempest 2000 (Atari) (demo) - shootemup
  • Terminal Velocity (demo) - shootemup; not playable with ARM610 and 486SX, better on high-end PC cards (use smaller screen sizes on 486 cards); SVGA mode works with PC Pro but is very slow; music and sound work
  • Terminator 1.02 - Unplayable with 486SX, slow but playable with 5x86; needs lots of RAM; sound will work with PC Sound Pro, but without it it's best left off to prevent crashes

  • Theme Hospital (Bullfrog) - possibly only runs with PC Pro; Windows95 requires DirectX and therefore won't work; hi-res mode sluggish but playable with StrongARM and 486DX4/100; low-res mode ok (but ugly); can crash (?); requires !PC video memory to be set to 2MB on some systems
  • Theme Park (Bullfrog, CD) - Simcity-style game; no sound, but music works if you have MIDI support and PC Sound Professional (although the sound with the introductory video still fails); VESA mode works with PC Pro, but is slow even with ARM710 and DX4/100, although not with 5x86 (and StrongARM?)
  • Thunderscape - sound works with PC Sound Pro
  • Tie Fighter - no or poor sound, difficult without joystick, "a bit slow" without StrongARM
  • Time Commando (Adeline) (demo) - 3D adventure game with lots of action, from makers of Alone in the Dark; scrolling poor but animation of characters good on ARM610 and 100MHz 586; both !PC 1.92 and PC Pro 2.01 give 320x240 screen resolution, rather than the supposed 640x480 available; sound works with PC Sound Pro
  • Timegate (demo) - sound works with PC Sound Pro; start game by running templier.exe
  • Tomb Raider (Eidos, CD) - 3D adventure/action game with excellent graphics; fast and playable with ARM610, PC Pro and 5x86 in VGA mode, smoother with StrongARM, PC Pro and 5x86 in VGA mode; sluggish in SVGA mode even with StrongARM, PC Pro and 5x86, but fine if you reduce the screen size (F2 or F3) which can be nice for some of the tunnels etc.; without PC Sound Professional, CD audio atmospherics work but sound effects and music don't; we're told by R-Comp that with PC Sound Professional sound works fully, but our testers don't entirely agree (it is good though); only tested on PC Pro

  • Virtual Snooker - sound works with PC Sound Pro if settings selected manually
  • Virtuoso - sound works with PC Sound Pro

  • Wallace & Gromit Fun Pack - this will work under Windows 95 if you install the Windows 3.1 version of the Fun Pack, together with the 16-bit (Windows 3.1) version of Quicktime for Windows; presumably works under Windows 3.1 as well; all games and the customiser work; the film clips are somewhat jerky
  • Walls of Rome (Mindcraft) - tactical strategy wargame
  • Warcraft - sound works with PC Sound Pro
  • Warcraft 2 (Mindcraft) - swords n' sorcery strategy game; works only with PC Pro; sound effects, speech, and music work fine (and add much) even without MIDI support on !PC v2.02; movie sequences work fine, although CD-ROM faster than 2x recommended; scrolling is considerably faster with StrongARM, but still very playable and recommended even with an ARM610; upgrades beyond version 1.0 do work, despite problems some people have had with them; internet multi-player games work with port 0x3f8 (COM 1), irq 4, i/o ports 3F8-3FF, and direct access to serial port enabled

  • Winter Olympics Lillehammer 1994 - strange game...
  • Wolfenstein 3D - works under 1.8x but not 1.91? You're better off with the RISC OS version...
  • World Rally Fever (Team 17, demo) - very poor
  • Worms I (Ocean) - video intervals far too slow even with 5x86 and ARM610 with earlier versions of !PC (best to press Escape to skip them, or apparently some improvements can be made by going into directory FMV and typing PLAY -noskip avi); but they play "perfectly" on later versions of PC Pro. Graphics and gameplay quite fast with StrongARM and 5x86. Music and other sound can be made to work if soundblaster set up properly. Run from CD by changing to drive D: and typing WRMS (installation program fails), patch from Team 17's website may also help with installation on some systems; substantial speed increase with faster PC card, especially scrolling. Demo often fails to move from one player to another; can apparently be solved by not changing any of team names, settings, etc. (but this makes things pretty boring); better with !PC v1.993?
  • Worms Reinforcements - works, but speech and audio effects sometimes corrupted; this can be corrected by setting cache to "write through" on PC cards with the Revision II ASIC.
