EMULATION

Sega Megadrive/Genesis

Two emulators are available:
DGen --- Generator

There is also a Megadrive emulator built into MESS, but it is a lot slower than these emulators. Plus also check out DarcNES, which includes partial Megadrive support.

Name DGen
Author David McEwen (david@acornemus.freeserve.co.uk)
Port of DGen by 'Dave' (dave@dtmnt.com), using Linux SDL sources (by Joe Groff)
Available David's web site, or Acorn Gaming
Supports Most games
Speed 35 frames per second
Version Development - not yet released
David has added lots of optimisation to his port of DGen so that it runs at a useable 35 frames per second - he took the sound code out to make up the speed, though, and the Z80 core has been removed so some games may not work properly. He's hoping to add sound back in at some point, however!

Name Generator
Author David McEwen (david@acornemus.freeserve.co.uk)
Port of None: Built on top of James Ponder's code
Available David's web site, or Acorn Gaming
Supports Most games
Speed StrongARM: 42fps with frameskip 1; 610/710: 12fps with frameskip 1
Version 0.16 - 19/11/00 (as of 29/12/00)
The Megadrive - called the Genesis in the United States - was Sega's highly successful 16-bit console, playing host to some of the best games ever, including the stunning Sonic the Hedgehog games. This emulator is a superb piece of work, recompiling the original machine code into native ARM code, and then running the games at a playable rate. The initial development was by James Ponder, but the recent development (into a releasable emulator) has been by David McEwen, prolific author of several Acorn emulators.
